Evaluation of Artists' Self Promotion Strategies: Luke Best





I am looking at 3 Illustrator's websites to evaluate and compare their strategies of self-promotion: ie. how they sell their work, how they make themselves available for contact, how they present themselves and their styles.

Lastly, I am looking at the self promotion of Luke Best, an Illustrator based in London. I assume he is fairly successful as he is represented by an agency: Heart Agency in both London and New York. His website is laid out very differently to both the ones i have looked at so far. It involves scrolling along horizontally to view examples of work. This makes it fairly simple to see lots of his images instantly rather than having to click on lots of little thumbnails or links.

His homepage also provides a short introduction about himself and does suggest getting in touch with him with enquiries so it seems he is actively seeking work.



On the about page there are publications, exhibitions and previous clients listed, making it clear who he has worked for and giving an overall impression of his success and the types of work he has undertaken. The format of the pages are fairly boring and plain but it probably suits the professional clients that he is looking for, and does make the information very clear.


There is also a link to his blog as found on both other sites i have looked at, and this allows you to further view his work as well as getting more of an impression of him as a person and artist. The blog continues the stark white layout and this for me, is a negative. I would personally prefer a more exciting page to look at with a more creative layout. However this kind of thing is a personal choice and not really a particular problem.


There is also a link to his shop which is on another website, as to be expected by somebody who is part of a collective and represented by an agency. The shop means there is an extra income coming in from the sale of his work, as well as money he may earn daily from commissions.
